Aramco Restores Petroline Flows Above 80% After September Repairs
Saudi Aramco has pushed Petroline throughput to roughly 6 million bpd, over 80% of its 7 million bpd nameplate, lifting Yanbu loadings past 4 million bpd and Saudi total exports to a post-war high of 6 million bpd in September.
Field notes
- Petroline throughput at ~6 million bpd, over 80% of its 7 million bpd nameplate capacity, with ~4.5 million bpd available for export
- Line halted Sept. 10 after attacks in Riyadh and Medina regions; pumping resumed Sept. 22 at 2.65 million bpd and recovered within days versus a late-October analyst forecast
- Yanbu loadings averaged over 4 million bpd since June 2026, versus 973,000 bpd in the same period a year earlier
- Total Saudi crude exports hit 6 million bpd in September 2026, an 80% jump from August and the highest monthly volume since the conflict began in late February
- Crown Prince addressed the Shura Council on Oct. 2, 2026, describing the kingdom as a 'global energy security valve' amid reported Petroline expansion considerations

Saudi Aramco has pushed throughput on its 1,200-kilometre East-West pipeline, officially known as Petroline, to roughly 6 million barrels per day — over 80% of its 7 million bpd nameplate — following repairs after a mid-September attack forced a 12-day shutdown.
The rebound lifted Red Sea loadings out of Yanbu past 4 million bpd and pulled total Saudi crude exports to 6 million bpd in September, an 80% jump from August and the highest monthly volume since war broke out in late February, according to a source familiar with operations.
After the line feeds domestic refineries along the Red Sea coast, about 4.5 million bpd remain available for international liftings.
What knocked Petroline offline?
Operators halted the line on Sept. 10 after attacks targeted facilities in the Riyadh and Medina regions, injuring workers. Pumping resumed at reduced rates on Sept. 22 — initially at 2.65 million bpd, per shipment-tracking firm Kpler — before climbing back above the 5.5 million bpd pre-attack baseline within days.
Industry analysts had forecast a full recovery would not arrive until late October. Aramco's pace confounded those projections.
CEO Amin Nasser had previously framed the company's outage playbook in blunt terms: temporary facility disruptions, he said, "usually last days, not weeks or months." The Petroline timeline matched that template almost to the letter.
How does this reshape Saudi export routing?
Petroline runs from Abqaiq in the Eastern Province to the export terminal at Yanbu on the Red Sea, giving the kingdom its primary strategic bypass around the Strait of Hormuz. The 2019 strike on Abqaiq and Khurais first underlined the corridor's value; today's flow levels reflect how heavily Saudi Arabia has leaned on the western route since regional conflict intensified.
During the September outage, Saudi Arabia briefly diverted cargoes back through Hormuz to honor contract commitments. The quick Petroline restart ends that workaround and restores the dual-route posture that has defined Saudi export strategy since 2019.
Yanbu loadings have averaged more than 4 million bpd since June, against 973,000 bpd during the same window last year. That fourfold-plus swing quantifies how the Red Sea export lane has displaced the Persian Gulf option for the bulk of Saudi term liftings.
What comes next for Petroline capacity?
Saudi officials have signaled that expansion plans are under consideration to widen the bypass and add redundancy to global supply routes. A capacity addition would tighten spare headroom on the line and, in any future disruption, raise the ceiling on alternative-route barrels heading to European and Asian refiners.
Addressing the Shura Council on Oct. 2, the Crown Prince reaffirmed the kingdom's role as a "global energy security valve," emphasizing its capacity to stabilize international markets despite regional turmoil.
