Rompetrol Rafinare puts 8.8 mln euro into 9.4 MW solar plant at Petromidia

Rompetrol Rafinare is spending 8.8 million euro on a 9.4 MW solar plant at its Petromidia refinery on Romania's Black Sea coast, SeeNews reported.

Field notes

  1. Rompetrol Rafinare invests 8.8 million euro in a 9.4 MW solar plant.
  2. The project sits at the Petromidia refinery on Romania's Black Sea coast.
  3. Implied cost is roughly 936 euro per installed kilowatt.
  4. Commissioning date and expected GWh output remain undisclosed.

Rompetrol Rafinare is investing 8.8 million euro ($9.6 million) in a 9.4 MW solar plant at its Petromidia refinery on Romania's Black Sea coast, the company confirmed in a SeeNews report.

The project anchors the refinery's push to cut operating costs and the carbon intensity of its processed barrels. At 9.4 MW, the array will supply a share of Petromidia's electricity demand, trimming purchased power at one of Southeast Europe's largest refining complexes.

Petromidia, near Navodari, is the flagship asset of Rompetrol Rafinare, the refining arm of Kazakhstan's KazMunayGas group. The complex operates alongside the Vega refinery in Ploiesti, giving the group roughly 5 million tonnes per year of nominal processing capacity across the two sites.

What does the investment signal?

European refiners face tightening emissions compliance under the EU Emissions Trading System, and on-site generation is one of the few levers that cuts both Scope 2 exposure and power bills. An 8.8 million euro outlay for 9.4 MW implies roughly 936 euro per installed kilowatt — in line with utility-scale solar costs in the region.

The move puts Rompetrol Rafinare in the company of Mediterranean and Black Sea refiners that have bolted renewable generation onto existing plots rather than buying grid certificates.

The watch item

The metric that will matter next is the commissioning date. Until Rompetrol Rafinare publishes the startup timeline and expected annual output in GWh, the plant's actual impact on Petromidia's energy balance remains an open figure.
