SBM Offshore has signed a construction contract for its seventh Fast4Ward hull with Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS) and China Shipbuilding Trading, both subsidiaries of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC). The order extends a shipbuilding relationship that has carried the Dutch floater specialist's serial-hull strategy through China's state yard group.

The new multi-purpose floater hull carries the designation MPF7 and features SBM Offshore's proprietary Fast4Ward generic standard hull design. The design offers crude storage capacity of up to 2.3 million barrels and adapts to a wide range of sea conditions, allowing the same base hull to serve FPSO projects across different operating environments.

MPF7 inherits the highly optimised design of its predecessor, including accommodation capacity for up to 240 personnel.

The numbers frame the order's significance for SBM Offshore's execution model. "This is the 13th MPF hull ordered to date, with each project providing lessons to further derisk the execution, while improving quality and productivity," said Øivind Tangen, CEO of SBM Offshore.

The standardisation logic is straightforward. By repeating a generic hull design across multiple projects, SBM Offshore aims to compress construction schedules, cut engineering risk and smooth the later integration of project-specific topsides. Seven of the thirteen MPF hulls ordered to date now sit with the Fast4Ward design series.

SWS chairman Chen Gang pointed to the accumulation of yard-side experience. "As this represents our 7th FPSO hull project for SBM, our team is fully committed to leveraging our premier shipbuilding capabilities and lean management principles to deliver this vessel with the highest quality, safety, and environmental standards, continuing to create long-term value for both organisations," Chen said.

The contract signature also signals continued demand for new floating production capacity. An order for a speculative-standard hull typically precedes the award or execution of deepwater FPSO leases, since the generic hull can be built ahead of final field-specific engineering. SBM Offshore has not yet named the field or client that MPF7 will serve.

For the Shanghai yard, the award consolidates a position as one of the principal builders of FPSO hulls for the global leased-floater market. CSSC's trading arm acts alongside SWS on the contract, consistent with the structure of earlier orders in the series.

The watch item is the next announcement tying MPF7 to a specific lease or project commitment, which would confirm the intended basin and startup timing for the unit.
