Yinson Production, Eni Amend FPSO Contract for Gas Capacity Upgrade
Yinson Production and Eni have signed a contract amendment for a major gas capacity upgrade on the FPSO John Agyekum Kufuor, the companies' announcement confirms.
Field notes
- Yinson Production signed a contract amendment with Eni for a major gas capacity upgrade on FPSO John Agyekum Kufuor.
- The FPSO operates on Eni's deepwater development offshore Ghana.
- The upgraded gas throughput figure, contract value and schedule remain undisclosed.
- Yinson Production says further execution details will follow at the detailed engineering stage.
Yinson Production has signed a contract amendment with Eni covering a major gas capacity upgrade on the floating production, storage and offloading vessel John Agyekum Kufuor, the companies confirmed in an announcement reported by Cyprus Shipping News.
The amendment formalizes engineering and modification work that will expand the FPSO's gas processing capability beyond its original vessel specification. Yinson Production operates the unit under a long-term charter with Eni, which manages the associated deepwater development offshore Ghana.
What does the amendment change?
The signed amendment converts what had been a study-level scope into contractual obligations. Under the revised terms, Yinson Production will carry out the upgrade work required to lift the FPSO's gas handling capacity, with Eni's field partners benefiting from the additional gas processing headroom on the host facility.
For an FPSO of this class, gas capacity upgrades typically involve compression additions, dehydration train modifications and expanded flare and gas export infrastructure. The vessel will continue producing and storing crude while the modification program proceeds, the standard approach for brownfield FPSO retrofits designed to avoid extended production shutdowns.
Yinson Production has not yet disclosed the upgraded gas throughput figure, the engineering schedule, or the contract value attached to the amendment. The company said further details on execution timing would follow as the project moves into detailed engineering.
Why gas capacity matters on this unit
The John Agyekum Kufuor has served as the host FPSO for Eni's operated deepwater gas-condensate and oil development off Ghana's western coast since first oil. Gas produced through the vessel supplies both the domestic power market via onshore export infrastructure and fuel for the field's own operations.
Raising gas capacity on the FPSO responds to a sustained West African theme: operators across the Gulf of Guinea are re-rating gas handling on producing assets as governments press for greater domestic gas supply and as associated gas reinjection programs expand. A higher gas ceiling on the host vessel also extends the commercial life of satellite tiebacks that would otherwise be constrained by processing limits.
For Yinson Production, the amendment strengthens the revenue base of one of its core leased FPSO assets and demonstrates an operator-client relationship deep enough to support mid-life capex on the unit rather than replacement.
Watch items
Three details will define the commercial significance of this upgrade:
- The upgraded gas processing capacity figure, once Yinson Production publishes it against the vessel's current design basis.
- The execution window — whether modification work runs concurrent with production or requires a planned turnaround shutdown, and how many days any outage would remove from the production calendar.
- Any extension of the charter term tied to the incremental investment, a common feature of mid-life FPSO contract amendments in the sector.
Eni has not commented beyond confirming the amendment. The Italian operator continues to rank among the most active deepwater drillers in West Africa, and infrastructure upgrades on its existing Ghana facilities signal continued confidence in the acreage surrounding the FPSO.
