Asia to Lead Global Polyethylene Capacity Growth Through 2030
Asia will dominate global polyethylene capacity additions through 2030, led by China's Zhejiang Petrochemical Daishan Plant 7 and India's Bina project, per GlobalData.
Field notes
- Zhejiang Petrochemical Daishan Polyethylene Plant 7 (Swing), Asia's largest single addition, is expected onstream in 2028.
- Fujian Sinopec Aramco Zhangzhou Plant 2 and Tangshan Xu Yang Plant 1 in China are slated for 2030 startup.
- Bharat Petroleum's Bina Polyethylene Plant (Swing), 100% BPCL-owned, targets production start in 2028.
- Indonesia has four polyethylene projects, South Korea three (S-Oil), and Brunei two (Hengyi Industries) by 2030.
- GlobalData's report covers capacity and capex forecasts for all active and planned plants, 2026–2030.
Asia will supply the bulk of the world's new polyethylene capacity by 2030, according to GlobalData's new report, Global Polyethylene Industry: Capacity and Capital Expenditure Forecasts with Details of All Active and Planned Plants, 2026–2030. Demand from packaging, automotive, and construction is pulling the buildout, and the region's industrial base leans on polyethylene for everything from consumer goods to heavy-duty applications.
The growth story has two anchors: China and India. China leads by a wide margin, with more upcoming projects than any other country in the region.
Which projects carry the biggest weight?
The single largest capacity addition in China — and the region — should come from the Zhejiang Petrochemical Daishan Polyethylene Plant 7 (Swing), under development by Zhejiang Petrochemical Co Ltd in Daishan. It's likely on stream in 2028.
Two other Chinese projects follow behind it:
- Fujian Sinopec Aramco Refining and Petrochemical Zhangzhou Polyethylene Plant 2
- Tangshan Xu Yang Petrochemical Tangshan Polyethylene Plant 1
Both are slated to start operations in 2030.
India's additions will come from fewer projects, but one stands out. The Bharat Petroleum Corporation Bina Polyethylene Plant (Swing) is the country's largest planned addition, with Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd as operator holding a 100% equity stake. Production should start in 2028.
Who else in Asia is adding capacity?
Beyond the two giants, three more countries round out the regional buildout through 2030:
- Indonesia — four upcoming projects
- South Korea — three projects planned by S-Oil Corporation Inc
- Brunei — two projects under development by Hengyi Industries Sdn Bhd
The takeaway is straightforward: the center of gravity for polyethylene supply is shifting east, and the projects now on the books will set trade flows for years after they start up.
The watch items here are the 2028 startups at Daishan and Bina — the first real test of whether this wave of capacity lands on schedule.
