Chord Energy Corp. has appointed Michael Lou as president and chief executive officer, effective Oct. 19, 2026, the Houston-based Williston Basin operator announced. Lou also joins the company's board of directors.

The appointment fills the vacancy left by Danny Brown, who stepped down as president and CEO to take the chief executive role at Expand Energy Corp.

For Chord's shareholders and service partners, the operational message is continuity: the company did not go outside for its next leader. Lou has spent 17 years in leadership positions at Chord and its predecessor companies, and his promotion runs through the succession bench the company has built since the Whiting Petroleum–Oasis Petroleum merger created it.

Who is Michael Lou?

Lou brings more than 25 years of oil and gas industry experience to the top job. His most recent posting was executive vice-president, chief strategy officer, and chief commercial officer, a role he held from March 2024 through October 2026.

Before that, he served as executive vice-president and chief financial officer from July 2022 to March 2024 — the window in which Chord consolidated its Williston Basin position and refined its return-of-capital framework.

His record inside the predecessor companies runs deeper still:

  • CFO and executive vice-president for Oasis Petroleum and its subsidiaries before the Whiting merger
  • President and director of the general partner of Oasis Midstream Partners
  • EVP and chief strategy officer at Chord from March 2024

Lou began his career in investment banking, spending 10 years at several global investment banks focused on the energy sector.

What does the change mean for operators watching Chord?

An internal elevation of a CFO-turned-strategy officer typically signals a steady hand on capital discipline rather than a strategic pivot. Lou helped shape Chord's commercial and portfolio decisions over the past two years; he now owns them outright.

The transition also removes a layer of execution risk that an external hire would have introduced. Brown's exit to Expand Energy, however, hands that operator a chief executive with direct Williston and Appalachian-scale public-company experience — a competitive consideration for peers in both basins.

For service companies and midstream counterparties in the Williston Basin, the contracts and development plans Lou oversaw as chief commercial officer will now be reviewed by the person who wrote them. That shortens decision cycles.

The watch item is Lou's first capital allocation framework as CEO — the guidance package that follows the Oct. 19 handover will show whether continuity extends to dividend levels and rig activity.
