Hurricane Isaias Cuts 71% of Gulf Oil Output; 1.46 MMbpd Shut In
Hurricane Isaias has shut in 1,458,814 bpd of Gulf of Mexico crude, or 71.51% of regional output, the federal regulator said Friday, with 1.26 Bcf/d of gas also offline and 129 personnel evacuated.
Field notes
- 1,458,814 bpd of Gulf oil production shut in, or 71.51% of regional output, per Friday agency tally
- 1.26 Bcf/d of natural gas offline, equal to 58.84% of Gulf gas output
- Offline oil tally gained 176,000 bpd in the 24 hours to Friday
- Shutdown began Tuesday at 185,120 bpd and reached 1.28 million bpd by Thursday
- 129 personnel evacuated from offshore installations as of the Friday report

Hurricane Isaias has shut in 1,458,814 barrels per day of U.S. Gulf of Mexico crude production, equal to 71.51% of current regional output, the federal offshore regulator reported Friday. Operators have also pulled 1.26 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas offline, or 58.84% of Gulf gas output.
How much Gulf output is offline?
The Friday notice is the third agency tally issued during the three-day event. Operators began pulling crews Tuesday, when just 185,120 bpd stood offline. By Thursday the figure had reached 1.28 million bpd. Friday's update added another 176,000 bpd in a single 24-hour window.
The same filing logged 129 personnel evacuated from offshore installations. That count covers rig crews moved to shore-based staging areas ahead of tropical-storm conditions. The figure will likely climb further as Isaias tracks across the southeastern Gulf.
The combined oil and gas offline volumes mark the largest coordinated weather-driven Gulf production response issued by the agency during the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season to date. Watch the next agency production report for the first post-storm restart data points.
How fast did the outage escalate?
The 176,000 bpd day-over-day gain marks the steepest single-day increment of the three-day event. Tuesday's starting figure of 185,120 bpd reflected early-phase evacuations at the most storm-exposed installations. By Thursday the offline total had multiplied nearly sevenfold in 48 hours.
Friday pushed the figure past 1.45 MMbpd, completing a roughly 690% rise in 72 hours. Each subsequent 24-hour cycle tends to widen the offline footprint as more platforms enter the precautionary shutdown window and operators finalize pre-storm securing procedures across deepwater and shelf-tier assets. The accelerating personnel count tells operators the system has not stabilized.
Where is the production coming back from?
The shutdown spans federal offshore tracts across the central and western Gulf of Mexico. The agency has not disclosed field-level detail in its Friday notice. Loop Current-affiliated deepwater systems — production infrastructure tied to the warm-water current that runs through the central Gulf — typically host the bulk of high-output platforms in the basin.
The shut-in volume mix tracks closely with the basin's deepwater weighting. (Deepwater fields, those in water depths exceeding 1,000 feet, account for the majority of federal Gulf oil output.) Operators maintain material positions across the basin, though none has published restoration guidance tied to Isaias.
Standard post-storm restart procedures require subsea infrastructure inspection, covering wellheads, flowlines and risers, before production resumes. That inspection cycle typically requires several days after crew reboarding, based on standard operating practice. The duration depends on the severity of weather exposure at each platform.
What is the watch item?
Watch the next federal production report, due within 48 hours, for the first post-storm restart data points. The 129-personnel evacuation count serves as the leading indicator of shutdown duration. Any extension of that count through the weekend would confirm a multi-day Gulf outage with downstream implications for Gulf Coast refining throughput and crude pricing benchmarks.
