Petrobras confirms second oil find at Morpho well off Amapá
Petrobras confirms a second oil-bearing interval at the Morpho well in 2,886m of water on block FZA-M-59 off Amapá, plus a 22-year, 800,000-tpa LNG deal with Cheniere.
Field notes
- Petrobras found a new oil-bearing interval at the Morpho well (1-BRSA-1405-APS) in 2,886m of water on block FZA-M-59 off Amapá.
- The find follows an initial hydrocarbon discovery at the same well in August 2026, confirmed to hold good-quality oil.
- The well lies in the frontier Foz do Amazonas Sedimentary Basin; no resource volumes have been declared.
- Petrobras signed a 22-year contract to buy 800,000 tpa of LNG from Cheniere Marketing.
- Cheniere's Sabine Pass and Corpus Christi terminals hold roughly 56 million tpa of combined LNG capacity.

Petrobras has confirmed a new oil-bearing interval in the Morpho well (1-BRSA-1405-APS), drilled in 2,886m of water on the FZA-M-59 ultra-deepwater block off the coast of Amapá state, northern Brazil.
The discovery extends the probe below the hydrocarbon interval first found in August 2026. Petrobras continued drilling at the site after that initial find in order to test deeper geological sections, and the operator now says the newly identified interval expands its understanding of the exploratory potential of the area.
The company detected the new interval through electrical logs, with confirmation from rock and fluid samples recovered during drilling operations. Laboratory analysis is under way to characterise the find further. Petrobras stated that similar studies on the August 2026 discovery confirmed the good quality of oil in place.
What happens next at FZA-M-59?
Drilling remains ongoing. Petrobras plans to complete the well and carry out further evaluation of the geological formations encountered before any resource estimate or development decision can be made. The well sits in the Foz do Amazonas Sedimentary Basin, a frontier province where Petrobras is still building its understanding of the petroleum systems and resource prospects.
The data from Morpho will feed into those ongoing basin studies. At this stage the project is appraisal-stage exploration — no resource volumes have been booked and no development concept has been sanctioned.
The company said all work is being performed with an emphasis on safety and environmental considerations, and framed the programme as part of its long-term plan to replenish oil and gas reserves through new exploration frontiers while contributing to Brazil's energy supply.
Petrobras locks in 22-year LNG supply from Cheniere
Separately, Petrobras last month signed a long-term LNG purchase and sale agreement with Cheniere Marketing, a subsidiary of Cheniere Energy. Under the contract, Petrobras will buy 800,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) of LNG over 22 years.
The company said securing these volumes is intended to reduce exposure to spot market volatility, improve risk management and enhance the reliability of its natural gas commitments.
Cheniere operates the Sabine Pass terminal in Louisiana and the Corpus Christi terminal in Texas, which together hold roughly 56 million tpa of operating LNG production capacity.
What to watch
The near-term watch items are the completion of Morpho drilling and the release of laboratory results characterising the new interval, which will determine whether Petrobras moves toward resource declaration in the Foz do Amazonas Basin. On the gas side, the start of deliveries under the Cheniere contract will mark a structural shift in how Petrobras manages its LNG supply portfolio.
