SLB, TotalEnergies sign 15-year DrillPlan digital well planning deal
SLB has signed a 15-year contract with TotalEnergies to deploy the DrillPlan coherent well planning and engineering platform, replacing parts of the operator's existing workflow with a shared, integrated dataset.
Field notes
- SLB signed a 15-year contract with TotalEnergies to deploy the DrillPlan well planning platform.
- DrillPlan integrates offset well data, trajectory designs, casing and completion records, and planning assumptions into a shared dataset.
- Rakesh Jaggi, SLB digital business president, said operators are seeking scalable technologies for consistent planning across large portfolios.
- Last month, SLB received a contract from OQ Exploration & Production to expand the Bisat-B production facility at the Bisat oilfield in Oman.
- Neither company disclosed the contract value or which TotalEnergies business units will adopt DrillPlan first.
SLB has signed a 15-year contract with TotalEnergies to deploy the DrillPlan coherent well planning and engineering platform across the operator's global well construction activities.
The agreement commits both companies to a long-cycle digital migration rather than a one-off software licence. DrillPlan will replace portions of TotalEnergies' existing planning environment by linking subsurface data with engineering and execution workflows through a shared dataset.
What does the DrillPlan scope cover?
DrillPlan is engineered to integrate four input streams that sit at the foundation of any drilling programme:
- Offset well information
- Trajectory designs
- Casing and completion records
- Key planning assumptions
Cross-functional teams — drilling, subsurface, completion and project engineering — will draw from a unified basis, reducing the version-control friction that typically arises when offset data sits in separate discipline silos.
The platform also leaves room for "continuous deployment of new digital technologies" as they mature, SLB said, signalling that the 15-year horizon is intended as an innovation runway rather than a frozen scope of supply.
What does SLB say about the deal?
Rakesh Jaggi, president of SLB's digital business, framed the contract as part of a portfolio-level shift among operators.
"Operators are increasingly looking for scalable technologies that can support more consistent planning decisions across large and diverse portfolios," Jaggi said.
He added: "This agreement demonstrates how customers are moving toward digital solutions that improve consistency, strengthen collaboration and provide a foundation for future workflow innovation."
The framing fits the wider pitch SLB has used for DrillPlan since the platform's launch — an interoperable layer designed to sit on top of existing customer workflows rather than displace them.
How does the deal fit the wider SLB–TotalEnergies relationship?
SLB described the contract as an extension of a long-standing collaboration. TotalEnergies has been a reference customer for several of SLB's digital offerings, and the new 15-year term formalises a multi-year migration that has been moving forward in pilot form at the operating-unit level.
Neither side disclosed the contract's value. Neither identified which TotalEnergies business units or geographies will adopt DrillPlan first, leaving the roll-out sequence — and the offset-data migration order — as the open variables in the deal.
What else is on SLB's recent contract slate?
The TotalEnergies award follows a separate contract from last month with OQ Exploration & Production, the upstream arm of Oman's state energy group OQ, to expand the Bisat-B production facility at the Bisat oilfield. That award covers surface infrastructure rather than drilling software.
What to watch
- First basin rollouts: which TotalEnergies operations adopt DrillPlan first, and the schedule for offset-data migration across the portfolio.
- Workflow extensions: whether the 15-year framework expands beyond planning into SLB's wider drilling automation portfolio.
- Reference effect: whether other IOC tenders through 2025-2026 follow the long-term, platform-level contracting model rather than discrete licence sales.
- Bisat-B progress: delivery schedule for the OQ surface expansion at the Bisat oilfield, which sits alongside the digital drilling award in SLB's recent contract slate.
