BP Posts $8.6 Billion Quarterly Profit as Refining Margin Hits $46.7/b
BP's third-quarter profit nearly quadrupled to $8.6 billion as its refining indicator margin hit $46.7/b, while net debt fell nearly $10 billion to $13.9 billion.
Field notes
- BP's underlying replacement cost profit reached $8.6 billion in Q3, nearly quadruple the year-ago figure and above analyst estimates of $7.3 billion.
- BP's average refining indicator margin rose to $46.7/b in Q3, from $29.6/b in Q2 and $15.8/b a year earlier.
- Net debt fell by nearly $10 billion in one quarter, to $13.9 billion from $22.2 billion.
- Operating cash flow of $14.8 billion doubled from a year earlier.
- Shell raised its buyback to $5 billion from $4.2 billion after posting Q3 earnings above $10.8 billion.

BP booked $8.6 billion in underlying replacement cost profit for the third quarter, nearly quadrupling from the same period last year and beating analyst estimates of $7.3 billion by a wide margin. The company reported the figures on Friday.
The result also rose $2.7 billion from the second quarter, and the driver was unambiguous. "Compared with the second quarter 2026, the underlying result mainly reflects significantly higher realized refining margins and significantly higher gas and marketing trading result," BP said in its statement.
What moved the margin?
The BP average refining indicator margin jumped to $46.7 per barrel in the third quarter, up from $29.6/b in the second quarter and $15.8/b in the third quarter of last year. Year to date through end-September, the margin averaged $31.2/b against $12.0/b in the same period a year earlier — a surge BP attributes to record-high global refining margins amid disrupted crude and fuel supplies from the Middle East.
For downstream operators, the message is that this is a supply-disruption margin, not a structural demand shift, and BP itself frames the fourth quarter with caution. "Refining margins are expected to remain elevated and sensitive to the cost of supply and market conditions," the company said in its outlook.
Debt down, targets in sight
Operating cash flow of $14.8 billion doubled from a year earlier, giving BP room to accelerate balance sheet repair. Net debt fell by nearly $10 billion in a single quarter, to $13.9 billion at the end of the third quarter from $22.2 billion three months prior.
Unlike Shell, BP has not raised shareholder payouts on the back of bumper profits this year. It suspended share buybacks early in the year to concentrate on debt reduction.
CEO Meg O'Neill said the strategy is on track: "We have now delivered our net debt and structural cost reductions targets and have line of sight on the remaining two of the four primary financial targets we set ourselves for 2027."
How do the peers compare?
The other European supermajors reported the same refining-led windfall this week.
- TotalEnergies doubled earnings from a year earlier on historically high refining margins, higher oil and gas prices, and strong oil and LNG trading.
- Shell's third-quarter earnings came in above $10.8 billion, nearly double a year earlier, lifted by record refining margins and higher LNG and gas prices.
- Shell raised its buyback program to $5 billion from $4.2 billion — the move BP pointedly declined to match.
The divergence matters for investors reading the sector. Shell is returning the windfall; BP is banking it against debt. Both approaches rest on the same fragile foundation: a refining margin elevated by Middle East supply disruption rather than durable demand growth.
The watch item is BP's fourth-quarter guidance. If crude and product supply normalizes, the $46.7/b indicator margin compresses quickly, and the gap between BP's $13.9 billion debt position and its peers' payout trajectory becomes the sector's central question.
