Drone Strike Hits Volgograd Again as Fire Glows Near Lukoil Refinery

Overnight drone strikes on Volgograd left a fire burning near Lukoil's 15 million t/y refinery and the Kaustik chemical plant, the fourth attack on the site this year.

Field notes

  1. Drones struck Volgograd on the night of October 2; a fire glow was visible near Lukoil's 15-million-t/y refinery and the Kaustik chemical plant, per ASTRA and Governor Andrey Bocharov
  2. The refinery accounts for roughly 5% of Russian refining capacity; a July 31 attack shut its AVT-1 and AVT-6 primary distillation units
  3. By ASTRA's count, the May 2026 attack was at least the tenth on the refinery since the start of the full-scale war; Lukoil has issued no damage assessment

Drone strikes hit Volgograd overnight on October 2, with a fire visible near Lukoil's Volgograd refinery and the adjacent Kaustik chemical plant, according to OSINT analysis by the Russian outlet ASTRA and statements from regional governor Andrey Bocharov.

The 15-million-tonne-per-year refinery — roughly 5% of Russia's total refining capacity — sits next to Kaustik in the city's southern Krasnoarmeysky district. The plant produces gasoline, diesel, aviation kerosene, fuel oil, and bitumen.

Residents across all districts of Volgograd reported drones overhead and numerous explosions during the night. Many complained that authorities declared no air raid alert.

ASTRA analyzed eyewitness footage and concluded the fire's glow was visible in the direction of the refinery and the Kaustik plant. The available videos do not allow analysts to determine exactly what caught fire.

Governor Bocharov confirmed a "massive drone attack" on industrial infrastructure in the region but made no mention of fires at the enterprises. He said a residential building caught fire and that one person was hospitalized.

A repeat target

The strike marks at least the fourth reported attack on the Volgograd refinery this year. On the night of July 31, a drone attack caused a large-scale fire at the facility, damaging key production units and shutting down the primary crude distillation units AVT-1 and AVT-6.

Earlier strikes came in February and late May 2026. By ASTRA's count, the May attack was at least the tenth on the facility since the start of the full-scale war.

The repeated targeting of primary distillation capacity matters for product balances. The AVT units form the front end of the refinery's crude processing train; sustained damage or extended downtime at a 15-million-tonne-per-year site squeezes domestic gasoline and diesel supply in Russia's southern federal district.

Kaustik, one of Volgograd region's leading chemical enterprises, produces dual-use products that are critically important to Russia's defense industry.

No fire confirmation at the refinery itself, no damage assessment, and no restart timeline had been issued by Lukoil at the time of reporting.
