Saipem Awards SCA $20 Million Caspian Cable Transport Contract
SCA lands its first contract, worth about US$20 million, from Saipem to supply five 1100 t cable carousels and manage transport from the UK to the Caspian.
Field notes
- SCA won its first contract, worth approximately US$20 million, from Saipem Contracting Netherlands BV.
- Scope includes five cable transport carousels, each with 1100 t capacity.
- Cable load-out takes place at JDR Cable Systems in the UK before onward transport via SPMTs and barges to the Caspian.
- Carousel manufacturing is underway at SCA's Dubai facility, with shipment to Europe planned by end of this year.
- SCA has delivered more than 50 carousels and related equipment worldwide.
Subsea Cable Assets (SCA) has booked its first contract — worth approximately US$20 million — with Saipem Contracting Netherlands BV to deliver cable transportation and transpooling services for a major offshore energy project in the Caspian region.
The scope covers engineering, fabrication of specialised equipment, installation and operation, demobilisation and reinstatement. SCA will supply five cable transport carousels, each rated at 1100 t capacity, together with associated cable handling equipment.
How will the equipment reach the Caspian?
The logistics chain starts in the UK. The cable spooling equipment will mobilise on a Cable Transport Vessel for load-out at JDR Cable Systems. From there, the loaded carousels move to Southeastern Europe, where Self-Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMTs) will transfer them onto smaller transport barges for the final leg into the Caspian.
SCA will manage the entire operation, from equipment supply through on-site deployment, as a single co-ordinated campaign — a selling point the company is keen to stress on its debut contract.
Manufacturing of the carousels and related equipment is already underway at SCA's Dubai facility, with shipment to Europe planned by the end of this year.
What does the deal signal?
SCA Chief Operating Officer Sil de Rijke said: "This multi-million-dollar contract with Saipem demonstrates the experience our team brings to complex cable transport and handling projects, based on our extensive track record created over recent years."
He added: "The real value SCA brings isn't just the equipment, but the specialised project management skills to oversee planning, logistics and execution from end-to-end across multiple geographies. That operational expertise, combined with our spooling and manufacturing capability, means we are ideally placed to deliver this project safely and on schedule."
The award gives a new entrant a foothold in one of the more logistically constrained offshore theatres. The Caspian is landlocked, so all project hardware must move by river barge or overland routes through ports in Southeastern Europe and the South Caucasus — a constraint that shapes contract scopes and rewards operators with proven multimodal experience.
SCA manages engineering and manufacturing facilities in Europe and Dubai through its supply chain. The company has delivered more than 50 carousels and related equipment worldwide and has executed some of the largest cable transports in the market, according to its own track record.
Saipem, as the contracting party, retains overall responsibility for the offshore energy project; the announcement did not name the end client or field. The contract covers surface logistics and cable handling only — not subsea installation itself.
The watch item: carousel shipment from Dubai by year-end, followed by load-out at JDR Cable Systems in the UK and the SPMT transfer onto barges in Southeastern Europe. On-schedule delivery there will set the tempo for the wider Caspian mobilisation.
